Kitchen Lighting: Designing Atmosphere in the Bespoke Kitchen

The Martin Moore Kitchen Lighting Scheme

In a beautifully designed kitchen, lighting does far more than illuminate a space. It shapes atmosphere, defines family life and transforms how a room feels throughout the day.

From softly concealed architectural lighting to sculptural statement pieces, every element works together to create a kitchen that feels immersive, balanced and deeply connected to the way people live.

What is the best lighting for a kitchen?

The best kitchen lighting schemes begin long before decorative fittings are selected. Effective lighting design is rooted in understanding how the kitchen will be used and how the atmosphere of the room should evolve throughout the day.

A well-considered kitchen lighting plan should respond not only to practical requirements, but also to mood, proportion and movement. The way light falls across cabinetry, reflects against natural stone or softens architectural details can dramatically influence how a kitchen is experienced.

For WOW!house 2026, the lighting scheme was developed by Homeplay, John Cullen Lighting and Lutron to create a layered environment that transitions effortlessly from bright, functional mornings to intimate evening entertaining. Rather than relying on a single source of light, the scheme combines subtle architectural lighting with sculptural focal points to create depth, warmth and atmosphere throughout the room.

How to choose kitchen lighting

Choosing kitchen lighting begins with understanding the different zones within the room and how each area will be used.

In a bespoke kitchen, lighting should feel intuitive rather than overly prescribed. Preparation spaces require focused illumination, while dining and seating areas benefit from softer, more atmospheric light that encourages relaxation and conversation.

The most successful kitchen lighting schemes balance practicality with emotion. A kitchen must function beautifully, but it should also feel welcoming and comfortable to spend time in throughout the day.

What types of kitchen lighting are there?

A layered kitchen lighting scheme typically combines several different forms of illumination, each contributing to the overall mood and functionality of the space.

Feature kitchen lights

Feature lighting introduces personality and visual drama to a kitchen while reinforcing the wider design language of the room.

Within the WOW!house kitchen, the botanical-inspired Ivy chandeliers by Porta Romana create a sculptural focal point above the space, introducing softness and movement against the room’s refined architectural backdrop. Statement lighting works particularly well within open-plan kitchens, where decorative fittings help define zones and create moments of intimacy within larger spaces.

Kitchen under-cabinet lighting

Under-cabinet lighting and internal-cabinet illumination play an important role in creating both functionality and atmosphere within a bespoke kitchen.

A bespoke kitchen introduces a softer layer of illumination that enhances depth and texture throughout the room. It also allows natural materials such as timber, stone and metal finishes to be appreciated more fully, particularly during the evening when harsher overhead lighting is reduced.

Designed for targeted task lighting, under-cabinet illumination should feel discreet and functional rather than purely decorative, seamlessly supporting the room’s overall atmosphere.

Kitchen island lighting

As the social centre of many kitchens, the island often becomes a focal point for lighting design.

Kitchen island lighting should balance practical illumination with visual impact, particularly within open and multifunctional spaces. Pendant lighting can introduce visual interest and personality whilst adding symmetry above the island.

At WOW!house 2026, the softly curved island acts as an anchor within the room, encouraging movement and gathering around the space. Lighting has been carefully positioned to emphasise its sculptural form while maintaining a sense of warmth.

LED kitchen lighting

LED kitchen lighting offers exceptional flexibility within contemporary bespoke kitchens, allowing lighting schemes to adapt throughout the day.

Through intelligent lighting control systems such as Lutron, brightness and atmosphere can be adjusted seamlessly to suit different moods and activities, from bright morning preparation to relaxed evening entertaining.

The capacious glazed wine store, framed in dark Mocha fumed oak cabinetry with bespoke storage for bottles, glassware, ice buckets, and decanters, is also lit from within, adding another layer of warmth and atmosphere to the kitchen as day transitions into evening.

At WOW!house 2026, the lighting scheme created by Homeplay combines precision lighting design with intuitive smart control, allowing the atmosphere of the kitchen to transition throughout the day to suit household needs from energetic breakfasts, to quiet homework periods and on to cosy dinners.

“Martin Moore and Samantha Bartlett have created a kitchen with a beautifully ornate ceiling and real attention to material and detail throughout. The fumed oak cabinetry, the Verde Natura quartzite island, every decision made with care. The lighting needed to honour all of that.

John Cullen Lighting’s design input ensured the scheme worked in harmony with the architecture and the materials, with every layer of light considered in relation to the space around it.”
